What? Money Really CAN’T Buy Me Happiness?

Turns out all that long-hair hippie talk about money not being able to buy you happiness might be true after all.  A new study of tens of thousands of people in over a hundred countries suggests that increased income doesn’t lead to increased positive emotions.

Increased income DID equate to an increase in “Life satisfaction”, which basically means what people felt about how their life was progessing along.  But that’s not the same thing as happiness.  That’s more a sense of “is my life where it should be by now?” or even “am I keeping up with the Joneses?”.

The difference, again, is in how often people were reporting feeling positive or negative emotions, which was tied to stuff like respect, automony, and quality of friendships much more so than money.  After all, it is possible to feel satisfied with your life progression, but still be unhappy.  Think of someone who’s career is going along just fine but has no joy in their life.  They may feel like their life is going along “as it is supposed to”, or is “own schedule”, but they’re just not a happy camper.

I’ll tell you one thing that hippies were NOT right about, though, and that’s body odor.  Take a shower, Stinky!
